Tom Boyd urges Celtic to hand Stuart Armstrong five-year deal

Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong has been heavily linked with a move away from Parkhead this summer.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Tom Boyd has suggested that Celtic should look to hand Stuart Armstrong a new five-year deal at Parkhead rather than consider letting him leave this summer.

The Record reports that Armstrong is a wanted man this summer, with Crystal Palace, Brighton and Southampton monitoring his situation as he heads into the final year of his contract with the Hoops.

The Record adds that Brendan Rodgers could consider letting him leave during this window rather than see him move for nothing next summer. But Boyd has insisted that Armstrong should hang around, and the Bhoys should reward him with a long-term extension.

“Hopefully we can get him to stay – a five-year contract would be nice,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.

“I think he’s a happy man at Celtic. He’ll win things at the club. What do you want to be as a player? Do you want to be a winner? Or do you want just to earn good money?”

Keeping Armstrong and getting him to sign a new deal would be a fantastic piece of business from Celtic this summer as he has been a brilliant player for the club since Rodgers arrived in 2016, particularly during the boss’s first season with the club.

However, it is not difficult to see why Rodgers is ready to consider bids for the 26-year-old. Losing him for nothing would seemingly make little sense, especially after the campaign where they boasted the midfield depth to leave Armstrong with a much more peripheral role.

If there is no chance of agreeing fresh terms, selling during the coming months would probably be the wise move. But having seen Armstrong previously extend his contract as it ran into its final year, the buying clubs should perhaps look to act quickly and offer a very reasonable fee to try and make sure that they get something done.
