Tottenham Hotspur were heavily linked with a move for Jeremy Toljan in the summer transfer window but the defender’s performances against them for Borussia Dortmund suggest that the Premier League club may have had a lucky escape.

Toljan, who is usually deployed at left-back but is also capable of playing at right-back, was the subject of interest from Tottenham in the summer, as reported by Sky Sports.

The move failed to materialise, however, with Toljan electing to leave Hoffenheim for Dortmund as opposed to Tottenham.

In Dortmund’s two group stage matches against Tottenham Toljan was presented with an opportunity to show Mauricio Pochettino’s side that they missed out by not signing him.

However, on this evidence, Pochettino will be rather relieved not to have signed Toljan as the Germany U21 international was frequently caught out defensively and posed a limited threat going forwards.

Tottenham have good depth in the full-back or wing-back positions, with Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier on the right and Ben Davies and Danny Rose on the left.

Toljan did nothing in his two displays against Tottenham to suggest that he would warrant a chance ahead of any member of that quartet.
