Toby Alderweireld stated on Twitter that he was ‘happy to get back out there’ after Tottenham recorded a 1-0 win over Everton on Monday night.

Following Tottenham’s defeat to Sheffield United last time out, Jose Mourinho opted to make changes to his starting XI, including bringing Alderweireld back into the heart of his defence.

The Belgian partnered the now-regular Eric Dier at centre-back, and for most of the night, they were untroubled.

This was the message Alderweireld sent to Tottenham fans after Mourinho’s men recorded a much-needed three points:

In recent years, Alderweireld has been a regular and a key member of Tottenham’s defence, but their poor form this season has resulted in the Belgian losing his place in the team.

It wasn’t a surprise when Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino in November that Dier became a regular in the starting XI, but the likes of Alderweireld and Vertonghen are seemingly still trying to convince their manager that they can be a part of his long-term plans.

Until then, Spurs will be hoping to finish in a European place at the end of the season and make the most of what has been a drama-filled campaign for the North London outfit.
