Toby Alderweireld has given his strongest signal yet that he is ready to commit to Tottenham Hotspur by telling Sky Sports that the club is “going in the right direction”.

The Belgian defender is yet to sign a new contract in North London – his current deal expires in 2019 according to The Guardian – and would be a huge loss to Spurs if they were forced to sell.

However, the 28-year-old has suggested that he is happy with the progress that Spurs are making under Mauricio Pochettino, and are close to achieving their goal of winning trophies.

Alderweireld told Sky Sports: “We have been doing very well the last couple of years.

“We are getting top four every season, almost winning the league and doing better in the Champions League than last season. We are going in the right direction and we have to keep working hard to achieve what we want to achieve.

“Europe helps us.It gives you games at the highest level and that’s where we want to be, playing in the Champions League and trying to win trophies and be up there.”

Tying Alderweireld down for the long-term future is crucial to Tottenham’s ambitions, as the former Ajax defender has proven absolutely critical to their fortunes in recent seasons.

In 22 Premier League matches without him – and the centre-back has missed the last three months with a hamstring injury – Spurs average 1.55 points per game, compared to 2.28 points per game in his last 40 league appearances.
