Tottenham Hotspur have impressed in the Premier League so far this season.

During an interview with the Evening Standard, Spurs centre-back Toby Alderweireld shared his confidence that his side will mount a sustained challenge for the Premier League this season, highlighting an area that could potentially give them the edge in the title race.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men currently sit in second position in the table, seven points adrift of league leaders Chelsea, and they have underlined their title credentials with some impressive victories over their direct rivals.

And the 27-year-old Belgian, who moved to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2015, explained to the Evening Standard how important it is for Tottenham to be equally as strong defensively as they are on the attacking front:

“Every team at the top must have a good defence and you build from that. The team know how important it is to be compact and keep clean sheets and that is a very strong thing for us.”

Since Alderweireld returned to the first-team setup, along with Harry Kane, after a prolonged spell on the sidelines through injury, Pochettino’s men have looked like an entirely different proposition.

They will now have to cope with another key absentee, however, after Jan Vertonghen was ruled out for up to two months with an ankle injury.

And Spurs fans will be praying that the Belgium international stays fit for the remainder of their campaign, as their club looks to close the gap on Chelsea above them in the table.
