Tottenham Hotspur missed out on lifting the Champions League trophy after suffering a 2-0 defeat against their Premier League rivals.
Toby Alderweireld has taken to Twitter to send an emotional message to Tottenham supporters after Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost the Champions League final 2-0 to Liverpool on Saturday – with the defender admitting that the squad are gutted.
The Reds clinched their sixth trophy in Europe’s premier club competition as goals from Mo Salah and Divock Origi at either ends of the game ensured that Spurs were beaten by their Premier League rivals.
Some felt that it was an underwhelming final, with Tottenham struggling to test Alisson until the latter stages of the contest and rarely looking like producing the sort of comeback that saw them book their ticket to Madrid in the first place.
Of course, the controversial decision to penalise Moussa Sissoko for handball inside the first 30 seconds proved to be a crucial moment. It is no surprise that the large majority of former footballers and pundits appear to have been baffled by the referee awarding a penalty.
Spurs fans would be forgiven for wondering how the contest could have been different had the spot-kick not been given. And Alderweireld’s message on social media certainly conveyed just how upset the squad were to not win the game.
The Belgian – whose future will surely remain a key talking point over the coming months – expressed his anguish that the side could not deliver the trophy for the supporters, but insisted that Tottenham can look back on this campaign with a lot of pride.
