Toby Alderweireld got the chance to make a rare start for Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the Premier League season.

Toby Alderweireld took to Twitter after Tottenham’s incredibly dramatic final day victory over Leicester City at Wembley to thank the fans for their support – and the fans responded by urging the Belgian not to leave the club in the summer.

As reported by the London Evening Standard earlier this week, Alderweireld is widely expected to leave Spurs during the upcoming window as the situation surrounding his contract continues to rumble on.

The uncertainty over his future appears to have played a part in Mauricio Pochettino’s apparent reluctance to use him too often in the latter stages of this season – though the Tottenham boss would surely argue that his previous injury has been a key reason for his restricted game-time.

It may have caught a number of fans by surprise therefore, that the former Southampton man was in the lineup for their final day clash with the Foxes that quite remarkably ended in a 5-4 victory for Tottenham.

Harry Kane and Erik Lamela both scored twice, while Christian Fuchs’ own goal ensured that Spurs bagged the three points that secured third spot in the table.

And after the game, Alderweireld took to social media to comment on the victory and send a message to the supporters after another encouraging campaign for Pochettino’s men.

It may be a case of simply reading too much into the message, but it must be noted that Alderweireld did not make any comment regarding next season, and given the uncertainty regarding his future, it would hardly be a surprise if his tweet left many fans convinced that he is indeed leaving in the summer.

A number of fans replied to the centre-back’s message by urging him to stay at Tottenham next season, but it certainly does appear that the supporters are starting to become resigned to the fact that Alderweireld may be on the move in the coming months – with plenty of anger being directed at Daniel Levy.
