Tottenham Hotspur have received a major boost with the news that Jan Vertonghen has returned to first-team training.

Toby Alderweireld has taken to Twitter to react to having Jan Vertonghen back in training after Mauricio Pochettino hinted, in comments reported by Sky Sports, that the Belgian could make his return to Spurs’ side this weekend.

Vertonghen has missed Tottenham’s last nine games due to a hamstring injury that he sustained in the win at Huddersfield Town at the end of September.

It is a huge boost for Spurs. The Daily Mirror reported shortly after the Huddersfield win that the club feared that he may be missing until after the Champions League group-stage finished next month.

Had he returned for the first fixture after Spurs travel to the Nou Camp for their final group game, he would have been missing for another six games. But he is now in with a chance of featuring against the Blues.

Spurs have, in fairness, been on a fantastic run lately. They have won their last four games in all competitions. But given that they have kept just one clean sheet in their last six, Vertonghen’s return will provide a major lift.

Unsurprisingly, Alderweireld appears to be delighted that his teammate is back in the ranks ahead of the busy festive period. The Belgian took to Twitter to celebrate the news.
