The Tottenham Hotspur defender has been linked with an exit this summer.
Toby Alderweireld spoke to reporters yesterday, and insisted that he has every intention to stay at Tottenham next season, despite having just one year remaining on his current contract, as quoted by SPORT 360.
The 30-year-old joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, for a fee believed to be with £11.5 million according to the Daily Mail, and he has gone on to be a huge success in north London.
Alderweireld has just one year remaining on his current deal, however, and he has a £25 million release clause inserted into said contract.
Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for the Tottenham star, with the Sun reporting that they are prepared to trigger the Belgian international’s release clause.
However, Alderweireld, who earns £80,000 per week according to Spotrac, insisted that he will sell be at Spurs next season, as quoted by SPORT 360:
“I’m going to say the same thing that I’ve been saying for the past couple of years, the only focus is Spurs. I have one year left on my contract, so in my head, I will play for Spurs next season.”
The problem for Tottenham is that they will actually be powerless to stop Alderweireld from leaving.
And if they do manage to keep hold of him, they certainly won’t want his contract to run down, and lose him for nothing next year.
Tottenham will most likely offer the Belgian a new contract this summer, but should he fail to agree terms, it would be no surprise to see him moved on, despite his comments suggesting that he will be staying in north London.
