Tottenham Hotspur were battered by Arsenal yesterday.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has received plenty of criticism for his team selection against Arsenal yesterday.

Toby Alderweireld’s omission from the starting XI was the main talking point, with Juan Foyth taking his place.

There was, however, another decision made by Pochettino that went under the radar, yet it was equally as baffling as the selection of Foyth over Alderweireld.

Spurs started with Ben Davies at left-back against the Gunners, whilst Danny Rose was left on the bench, and whilst the Welshman has been extremely solid this season, he is not in the same league as the England international.

The 28-year-old has made just five Premier League starts this season, with one of those being away at Manchester United in August.

Rose was excellent against the Red Devils, proving that he is a player who is made for the big occasions, and they don’t come much bigger than a North London Derby.

Rose has always played to an incredibly high level for Tottenham against Arsenal, and the Lilywhites could have really done with his experience and quality down the left hand flank at the Emirates yesterday.

All of this seems a little harsh on Davies, but the question must be asked, is the Welshman good enough to be playing for a club who are expected to challenge regularly for major honours?

The answer to that is up for debate, but one thing is for certain, the same question would never be asked about Rose’s ability.
