The Belgian defender admitted the club were disappointed with their failure in the Champions League.
Toby Alderweireld has been commenting on the upcoming Europa League clash with KAA Gent this week. The Tottenham Hotspur defender is all set to take on his countryman in a weeks’ time as they look to impress in the secondary European competition after being eliminated from the Champions League.
He was speaking to Sport/Voetbal Magazine when he mentioned how this would be Gent’s biggest game of the season, and how Spurs must be wary of this fact:
“I think that we join every competition to win. That’s not arrogance, that’s the goal. If you’re at this club, you have to have.
“For Gent is perhaps a bit the match of the year. Everyone asks is for us, the Belgians, the AA Gent. Then we say that it is a difficult team to play. But we are favourite.”

The Belgian defender went on to discuss how he felt the club needed to establish themselves more in the Champions League.
He made it clear that Spurs must qualify for the competition again for next season:
“We are disappointed. Also, it is important that we be there again next year. For many boys it was a first experience.”
Tottenham struggled to find form in the competition this season, ending up being dumped into the Europa League by AS Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen.

But it is looking increasingly likely they will be in the competition again next season. Spurs are fighting for the Premier League title and a top four finish is looking likely.
But if they could secure qualification by Europa League victory then Tottenham fans will be very pleased.
