The Tottenham Hotspur defender’s future is still unclear.
Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld spoke to reporters after his side’s win over Chelsea last night, and insisted he is happy to stay with the club for at least another year, after the north London outfit activated a 12-month extension on his previous contract, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
The centre-back’s deal now runs until the summer of 2020, but by excessing the option to extend for another year, Spurs have left themselves open to offers for the Belgian, with a £27 million buy-out clause now activated.
Alderweireld, 29, is widely regarded as one of the finest centre-backs in world football, so losing him would be a massive blow for Tottenham, if he does leave of course.
The Belgium international spoke to reporters last night, however, and insisted that he is happy at Spurs after signing his contract extension with the club, as quoted by the Daily Mail:
“I am very happy to stay another year, It was in my contract and I’m happy Spurs gave me the confidence to stay another year.”
Obviously if any club submits a bid of £27 million for Alderweireld, Tottenham will be powerless to prevent him from leaving, but it would at least be better than losing him for nothing in the summer – something that would have been the case, had they not exercised their option to extend his deal by 12 months.
