Vertonghen was Spurs’ stand-out player during the 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Jan Vertonghen was the pick of the bunch at Wembley after being used as a left-back by Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino on Wednesday night – and Toby Alderweireld has jokingly praised the defender.
Danny Rose and Ben Davies were both ruled out of the match. Davies is struggling with a groin injury, while Rose picked up a knock in the 3-1 win over Leicester City last Sunday and could not return in time for Wednesday.
It saw Vertonghen picked over Kyle Walker-Peters on the left side of defence, and Pochettino’s choice to start the Belgian at left-back paid off with the ex-Ajax star putting in a glittering display.
Vertonghen scored one and created another for Son Heung-min as the north Londoners earned an excellent 3-0 lead in the first leg of the last 16 clash, and Alderweireld joked “Why you now a LWF?”
It was Vertonghen’s cross that finally broke the deadlock, picking out Son inch-perfectly with the South Korean scoring his 16th of the season with a well-placed volley.
Vertonghen then scored a very similar goal as he got on the end of Serge Aurier’s cross, before Christian Eriksen’s corner was expertly nodded into the net by substitute Fernando Llorente for his seventh of the season.
Spurs take on Burnley on Saturday at Turf Moor, while the second leg against Dortmund takes place on March 5.
