Alan Shearer stated that Newcastle’s heavy defeat over the weekend is a ‘reality check’ for the ‘squad, management and the owners’, as he told Premier League Productions (03/04/22 at 6:30 pm).

The Magpies legend also warned his former club that they may think ‘they are safe now’ in their Premier League relegation battle, but they aren’t.

Eddie Howe’s side are sitting nine points above the Premier League’s zone, which is some going because of where the club were before Christmas.

In truth, Newcastle probably have done enough to secure their Premier League status, but shipping five in the manner in which they did at Spurs wouldn’t have helped the mood in the camp.

A certain Tyneside hero didn’t like what he saw, as Shearer expressed his frustration to the players and sent out a stark warning to all.

“I think it’s a reality check to the Newcastle squad, to the Newcastle management and to the owners,” said Shearer. “To say ‘yes we had a good time of late’.

“Chelsea and Everton (defeats) were perhaps acceptable. But not this. It’s nowhere near good enough. It’s a reality check because Newcastle are going to sign players in the summer and the players need to realise they aren’t safe at this club because of the run they have had.

“They were in huge danger of being relegated at Christmas time. They have had a decent run since January, but the players now need to know they are fighting for their places.

“Their hands dropped. I don’t know whether they think they are safe now or not. They’re not safe. They need to realise they need to get, at least, one more win.”

It’s probably not the fact that Newcastle shipped five at Spurs that’s the issue, it’s the manner in which they collapsed in the second half.

At the end of the day, with players like Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane on the other side, those two can rip apart any team in the world.

But, at half-time, it looked like the Champions League-chasing side were in a real battle with Newcastle.

Then the ghost of Steve Bruce seemed to have emerged after the break because that performance was what the players were producing during the Mike Ashley era.
