The Argentine centre-back let his side down once again on Sunday afternoon.
The case of Fabricio Coloccini’s last few months have been strange, to stay the least, at Newcastle United.
The 33-year-old skipper and centre-back endured a nightmare season at St James’ Park last term, with many supporters expressing their wish for him to leave over the summer.
Yet his reward this term… was a new contract. And Coloccini’s form has not improved.
There may have been the odd glimpse but his moment of madness cost Newcastle the Wear-Tyne derby on Sunday. His red card may be argued against but the unnecessary nature of his challenge sums up what Mick Quinn called a ‘braindead’ defender on Twitter.
But has Steve McClaren criticised his form this season? He has largely sung his praises!
It seems as if McClaren might even be personally scared of Coloccini – he gets away with whatever he wants.
Throughout his career, the Newcastle boss has been a soft touch. He tried to prove he wasn’t with England, dropping David Beckham, but ended up bringing him back – only strengthening his unwanted reputation.
At St James’ Park, it actually is time to drop Coloccini. Maybe for good.
Either that or McClaren must get tough on the 33-year-old. He needs to tell him enough is enough, not hand him a new contract on a plate!
His red card will be disputed but Coloccini’s stupidity ultimately cost Newcastle yet again on Sunday afternoon. How many more times will the Magpies allow the Argentine to put them in jeopardy?
