Clinton Morrison thinks Atletico Madrid have made a top signing after Matt Doherty’s abrupt exit from Tottenham Hotspur on transfer deadline day.

The former Crystal Palace striker, who is a boyhood Spurs fan, also added that Tottenham themselves did ‘good business’ by bringing Pedro Porro to the club from Sporting Lisbon.

The highly-rated wing-back might be thrown straight into the action for his new side when they welcome Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to north London on Sunday.

With Doherty out of the door, Djed Spence now on-loan at Rennes where he impressed on debut, it leaves Antonio Conte to pick between his January addition and Emerson Royal.

Therefore, there is a big chance that Porro will be lining up against Jack Grealish or Phil Foden, depending on who Guardiola picks to start.

Nonetheless, with Doherty now repping Atletico Madrid and Porro at Hotspur Way, this is what Morrison made of it all, as he told Sky Sports News (04/02/23 at 2:05 pm).

“Porro is a good signing,” said Morrison. “A wing-back, they needed to strengthen, as you said, they let Djed Spence go out on loan to Rennes. They let Matt Doherty go to Atletico Madrid.

“What a signing it is for him to go to a club like that. But Porro, I think it’s really good business. I think Tottenham fans would have wanted more.”

PORRO TO START?

Conte has had a lot to say about Tottenham’s ambitions off the field and how they go about things on the recruitment side.

When Djed Spence was signed, he made it clear that he wasn’t someone he wanted.

Well, now there is a player he wanted through his doors and it’s in a very, very key position.

Given the system Conte plays, the wing-back roles are the most important, but since he joined, it’s proven to be one of the weakest areas of the pitch and that’s where Porro could change things up.
