Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has said that he wants Steve Bruce to be the manager of the first team once the proposed takeover goes through, as quoted in The Chronicle.

According to The Chronicle, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund want to buy Newcastle from current owner Mike Ashley.

Sky Sports have reported that former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is the first-choice managerial candidate for PIF, with Rafael Benitez also in their thoughts.

The report has claimed that Bruce will stay on as the manager of Newcastle until the end of the season, but 22-year-old Longstaff wants him to be at St. James’ Park beyond the summer as well.

The Chronicle quotes Longstaff as saying when asked if it would be unfair to overlook Bruce: “I think it is, to be honest. From the moment he came, in China, at the start of this season, he’s been brilliant.

“There have been times where for me personally I’ve wanted to play, he’s left me out and I’ve asked the question [why] and he’s been brutally honest with me.

“That’s what you need. “I’ve got all the respect in the world for the manager – he’s helped me massively in terms of mentality to be able to go out there every single week and not just do it one day in training or for one game, he’s drilled that into me.

“If you look at the team this year, we’ve been pretty successful I think – a lot of people wrote us off at the start, and I think it would be unfair if you didn’t give him the chance to carry on the work that he has started to put into place.”

Newcastle United stay

Bruce has done a good job at Newcastle so far this season, and he should be given at least a chance.

True, Pochettino and Benitez are bigger names and have a bigger profile, but Bruce has a good track record, and if he is given funds in the next two or three transfer windows, then he could build a very strong and competitive team.
