Glen Johnson has told gaming website GG Recon that Liverpool transfer target Jude Bellingham has many similar characteristics to Anfield legend Steven Gerrard – as the Reds continue to pursue a deal worth north of £100million.

Bellingham, 19, is likely to be enjoying some well-deserved rest after the World Cup came to a close for England. Dortmund are not in action until January 22. The midfielder was arguably England’s best player at the World Cup.

Perhaps the better side against France, England were knocked out with Harry Kane missing a second penalty and now, they are home. Bellingham, though, may find himself the subject of offers come the January transfer window.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg recently claimed that Liverpool are in a three-horse race for Bellingham. The Reds, alongside Manchester City and Real Madrid, would have to spend a figure said to be in the region of £129million.

Asked about Liverpool’s interest in Bellingham and any comparisons he could make between Bellingham and other players, Johnson named Gerrard. He says of all the comparisons of Bellingham, Gerrard makes the most sense.

“I don’t know if I’ve seen somebody like him to be honest. If I had to say, then I’d say Steven Gerrard, somebody who can tackle, run, has great energy and scores goals. He’s more like Stevie than anybody else he’s been compared to.”

Johnson: £129m Liverpool transfer target Bellingham similar to Gerrard

It is interesting to see where Bellingham will end up. Does he join Real Madrid and become the long-term replacement for Luka Modric and Toni Kroos? Alongside midfield talent such as Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni?

Or does he go to the Premier League and join the all-conquering Manchester City – or, try to help Liverpool build something once again under Jurgen Klopp? Of course, Klopp will have his Dortmund connections and that will help.

But, the big question for Liverpool is whether they can afford to splash an enormous £129million on one player. A place in the top four might also prove pivotal if the Reds are to stand any chance of signing Bellingham.
