Even in the wild-eyed, panic-buying world of the transfer market, a little patience can still go a long way.
And, 18 months after they failed to bring him to Villa Park from the erratic Eredivisie, Steve Bruce’s side could finally welcome Tjaronn Chery to the Midlands complete with a year and a half of Championship experience under his belt.
According to talkSPORT, Villa made a bid of £3.5 million for the Dutch midfielder in the summer of 2015 before they unknowingly embarked on one of the most pitiful Premier League campaigns in the competition’s history.
However, while their approach came to nothing under Tim Sherwood, it could be a different matter entirely under Steve Bruce.
Sky Sports report that Villa are keen on renewing their interest in Chery, an exciting, ambitious attacking midfielder renowned for his long-range shooting ability, after he fell out of favour at QPR under Ian Holloway.
Nonetheless, the 28-year-old has performed rather well for the most part since arriving at Loftus Road from Groningen a few weeks after Villa’s initial interest came to nothing and, after making 59 appearances in the English second tier, Chery could move to the Midlands armed with substantial knowledge of the intricacies of Championship life.
And who knows what would have become of his career across The Channel if he had been part of the worst Villa side in history?
As it stands, the Midland giants may find that failing to pluck Chery in the summer of 2015 could have been a blessing in disguise.
