Paul Merson believes Tottenham and Chelsea will both get wins on the board in midweek.

Paul Merson has told SkySports that he expects Chelsea to maintain a seven point gap over Tottenham Hotspur in midweek.

Both teams play on Wednesday evening, with Chelsea hosting Manchester City and Tottenham visiting Swansea City.

Chelsea dropped points at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday allowing Spurs to close the gap, but Merson feels Mauricio Pochettino’s side will have to wait until Saturday – when they play hours earlier – to put more pressure on the leaders.

He predicts Chelsea will beat Manchester City 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, commenting: “I just don’t see how Man City are going to contain Chelsea. They’re all over the place at the back at the moment. I think Chelsea will bounce back here.

“I think there is still a title race, because I’ve got Tottenham to win, and then I fancy them to win again early Saturday against Watford, so that would be four points.”

Merson added that he expects Tottenham will go to Swansea and record a 2-0 victory.

He said: “I’m going to go with Tottenham. It was a professional performance at Burnley. It was difficult at first but they turned it on.”

Swansea are in a relegation battle and face a tough task to upset Tottenham.

Paul Clement’s side have lost the momentum they were picking up at the start of 2017, picking up only one point from their last three games.

Chelsea are at home so Tottenham will have to assume they will get a win, with anything less purely a bonus. At the weekend they travel to Bournemouth with Spurs playing at home to Watford earlier in the day.
