Tottenham Hotspur are title contenders, could any of these former players help them clinch the crown?

Tottenham Hotspur are in prime position to challenge league leaders Chelsea after beating the Blues earlier this month.

Spurs are on a winning streak and look a more settled side than Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, but could need one or two more signings to tip them over the edge.

Signing players in January is always tough as it means they can struggle to settle, but if Spurs sought to bring back a former player, the adjustment period would not be so dramatic.

Here are three veteran ex-Spurs players who could still play a big role…

Michael Dawson

Dawson was a fan favourite at White Hart Lane and is currently the Hull City captain.

The Tigers would be desperate to keep him around, but an injury to Jan Vertonghen could make him useful for Tottenham.

Spurs have cover at the back, but an injury to Toby Alderweireld would seriously derail their title bid. Bringing in Dawson could negate this, and keep them on track.

The centre-back will have a sense of loyalty towards Hull, but will also be sorely tempted by a Tottenham offer if it came in.

Jermain Defoe

Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe

Another former Spurs ace currently stuck in a relegation battle, Jermain Defoe is a key player for Sunderland’s survival prospects.

The Black Cats would demand a big price for him, but if Defoe dug in and downed tools, chairman and chief negotiator Daniel Levy may be able to pressure Sunderland into doing a deal.

Defoe has scored 12 goals this season, just one less than Harry Kane has, and would immediately become Tottenham’s second best striker.

Robbie Keane

A cheaper option, but one perhaps worth considering, former Spurs ace Robbie Keane is a free agent and looking for one last challenge.

His contract expired with LA Galaxy after a successful spell in MLS, and a Premier League title challenge would be tough for the Irish legend to turn down.

He would take the pressure off Vincent Janssen and provide Spurs with a vital option up front, and would add further feel good factor around White Hart Lane.
