Tottenham Hotspur weren’t the only ones to impress in the Champions League last night.

Tuesday was another memorable European night for Tottenham Hotspur as they came from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in Germany, securing top spot in Champions League Group H.
A Bundesliga side who fared much better were Red Bull Leipzig, who thrashed last year’s semi-finalists Monaco 4-1 with all goals coming in the first half and Timo Werner on the scoresheet twice.
Werner, who was linked to Spurs by The Telegraph in the summer and has been on their radar since 2015, now has 11 goals for the season and would be the ideal signing to complement Harry Kane.

Mauricio Pochettino’s 3-5-2 formation used in Dortmund last night, with match-winner Son Heung-min playing in behind fellow goalscorer Kane, is a subtle adjustment that could take Spurs to new heights.
Tottenham have repeatedly made transfer mistakes when trying to find adequate cover for Kane, with Clinton N’Jie, Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente, so far at least, all struggling in North London.

The club’s focus should instead be on signing a quality partner for Kane, someone who could also deputise as a lone striker when the England international is unfit, and 21-year-old Werner fits the bill perfectly.
Son performed very well against Dortmund and could compete for the role, but Werner is a more natural striker whose pace and finishing is that little bit more devastating than the South Korean’s.
Tottenham might witness that for themselves in the Champions League knockout stages, with Werner’s Leipzig vying with Porto for a runners-up spot in Group G that would make them eligible to face Spurs in the last 16.
