The future of German football looks to be in good hands with Bundesliga phenomenon Timo Werner – no wonder Spurs and Liverpool are interested.
On current form, Timo Werner would be a welcome addition to almost any club on the continent.
The former Stuttgart winger has evolved into one of the most complete goalscorers in the game after just over a year at RB Leipzig, outscoring every other German player with 21 Bundesliga goals last season before earning the Golden Boot as Joachim Low’s side triumphed at the 2017 Confederations Cup.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that there is no shortage of interest in a player who, at the age of just 21, is already being tipped to be Germany’s next great centre-forward. The Telegraph reported last month that Tottenham Hotspur are still keen on a player they have tracked since 2014 while The Sun claimed that Real Madrid have joined Liverpool in the race.
And Werner has hardly dampened the speculation by listing each and every club that may pique his interest – including both Liverpool and Tottenham.
“Of course I want to play at a big club. But, we have not yet come to terms with the development at Leipzig. Perhaps RB will be a big club too – I’m quite sure,” Werner told Sport Bild. “In Spain there are a maximum of three clubs with Barca, Real and Atletico Madrid.
“In England there are a few more: Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City.”
There is a feeling that Liverpool still need a truly prolific centre-forward to fight for top honours while Tottenham are still on the lookout for an alternative to Harry Kane. Fernando Llorente, the summer signing from Swansea City, is 32 years of age and hardly a long-term solution.
Leipzig director Oliver Mintzlaff confirmed via The Sun that Werner has no release clause but no matter how much the forward costs it would be a fine investment.
