Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and Chelsea is bound to throw up a very interesting subplot.
The Reds visit Stamford Bridge this weekend in what is a tricky test early on in their Premier League title defence.
That’s because the West Londoners have enjoyed a stunning transfer window, signing Hakim Ziyech, Werner, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz to name a few.
Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Werner, for months before he ultimately joined the Blues in a £47.5 million deal.
Fans of the Anfield club were left fuming over the fact that he signed for Frank Lampard’s side.
But the former Leipzig striker is under no illusions about the size and mite of the Reds, admitting that they’re ‘one of the best in the world’ and that he can’t wait to test himself against them on Sunday.
He told London News Online: “I’m looking forward to playing Liverpool. There are a lot of good teams in the league but Liverpool are one of the best in the world.
“It will be a good challenge to show how far we have come. We will try to win the game, but the whole of Liverpool’s defence is good.”
Liverpool conceded 33 times in 38 Premier League games en route to the title last season, so Werner is spot-on when he mentions their defence.
But Jurgen Klopp’s side didn’t look all that strong last weekend when Leeds United fired three past them at Anfield – and if a newly-promoted club can do that, then Chelsea, with their quality, definitely can.
