Pundit Davie Provan has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Rangers boss Mark Warburton should leave the club with his reputation intact this summer.

The Gers have blown hot and cold in their first season back in the Scottish Premiership since being demoted in 2012, as they had gone five games unbeaten before facing Celtic on New Year’s Eve.

After returning from the winter break, Rangers picked up a couple of wins over Motherwell before a disastrous 4-1 defeat at the hands of Hearts last Wednesday.

Warburton’s side had the chance to redeem themselves as they took on Ross County at Ibrox, but it was another disappointing display as Rangers could only muster up a 1-1 draw.

Rangers have now dropped to third place in the Scottish Premiership table, and whilst they’re level on points with Aberdeen, they lie a whopping 27 points adrift of league leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The lack of a title challenge – and faltering hopes of finishing second – have piled the pressure on manager Warburton, who was an Ibrox hero only a year ago after guiding the club to promotion from the second tier.

Some fans already want Warburton gone in order to bring in a new manager, but the Rangers boss has been given some surprise advice from pundit and former Celtic winger Davie Provan.

Provan has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Warburton is managing a ‘bang average’ Rangers team, and should walk away in the summer with his reputation intact having been given little money to spend.

“Mark Warburton is on a fool’s errand at Ibrox,” said Provan. “He can’t compete with Celtic, while Gers’ punters will greet a second place finish with a shrug of the shoulders. The midweek Tynecastle defeat was proof of a bang average Rangers team desperately needing investment.”

“But a board, unable or unwilling to fund improvement, are doing nothing to support their manager. If Warbs sees out the season he should walk in the summer while his reputation is still intact,” he added.
