Jonny Evans remained at West Bromwich Albion following the summer transfer window despite links of a move to Manchester City.

One of the most important pieces of business that West Brom did during one of their most impressive transfer windows for many years was the ability to keep hold of Jonny Evans.

The defender was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City throughout the window – as reported by The Telegraph – but the Baggies managed to watch the deadline come and go with the Northern Irishman still in their ranks.

One thing that that same report from The Telegraph in mid-August suggested was that West Brom planned to offer Evans a new contract worth £85,000 a week as they tried to bring an end to the speculation.

But while the window may now be over, West Brom would surely be wise to step up their efforts to get the former Manchester United man to sign a new contract.

The Telegraph reports that Evans has less than two years left on his current deal at The Hawthorns, so not extending that contract in the near future is perhaps a gamble.

This next month is surely likely to be the period when speculation regarding potential transfers will be at its quietest, and thus, it may well be the point when Tony Pulis finds it easiest to convince Evans that his future remains with the Baggies.

Getting Evans to extend his contract beyond 2019 will send out a tremendous statement given his stock has arguably never been higher.

And while sceptics of the modern game may question how valuable contracts actually are when big clubs come calling, getting Evans to put pen to paper will surely ensure that the Baggies receive an even bigger fee if City come back in in future and he decides that he wants to leave.
