Bolton Wanderers finally picked up their first Championship victory of the season at the 12th time of asking as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1.
For the Owls that was their fourth defeat of the campaign to leave them in 12th position with 16 points and serious questions are starting to be asked about Carlos Carvalhal’s future as manager.
Carlos Carvalhal, manager of Sheffield Wednesday, looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match against Bolton Wanderers.
Carvalhal guided Wednesday to the playoffs in his first two years at Hillsborough but despite coming so close to reaching the Premier League, many fans are starting to become frustrated with the Portuguese.
However, Micky Gray – who spent 18 months with the Yorkshire club before announcing his retirement in 2010 – believes that the 51-year-old deserves more time.
Former defender and now pundit Michael Gray.
“You only get a few opportunities to get yourself into the Premier League. They’ve had two little sniffs at it and they fell short at the final hurdle,” Gray said on Channel 5’s Championship programme.
“I still think you’ve got to be patient with him. A couple more wins will get them back up where they should be and if they can get into the playoffs, who knows? They’ve got a chance.”
Gray does have a point as Carvalhal’s men are only four points behind Leeds United in sixth and the playoff places, although three losses in their last four outings doesn’t make for great reading.
Next up for the Sheffield outfit are Derby County away, who are level on points with their opponents after beating Nottingham Forest 2-0 in the East Midlands derby.
