Tim Sherwood has warned Gini Wijnaldum that leaving Liverpool at the end of the season will be a step down in his career, as he told Premier League Productions.

Liverpool dispatched Wolves 4-0 on Sunday night, with Wijnaldum scoring a peach of a goal from the edge of the penalty area.

The Dutchman’s contract is due to expire next summer and it has been well-documented that his former national coach and fellow countryman, Ronald Koeman, could try to prize him to Barcelona.

Sherwood questioned where the ‘tremendous’ Wijnaldum would go if he were to leave the current Premier League champions because he thinks there is only one way down.

“I wouldn’t have thought so [Liverpool wanting to lose Wijnaldum],” said Sherwood. “It’s a good position he is in. Whether he is going to sign for the champion Liverpool or go where?

“Where is he going to go? Where is the step up from Liverpool?

“It’s another great signing for Liverpool. He rehearsed, didn’t he? He went to Newcastle, so he didn’t have to settle when he came to Liverpool. Hit the floor running.

“Gini is a tremendous player. He’s got a bit of everything in his game. He can break it up. He can play forward as you have seen tonight. He has a finish on him as well. He would like to score more goals than he actually does.”

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

There’s no doubt that there is more to Wijnaldum’s game than the defensive monster he has transformed into under Jurgen Klopp.

But with the system Klopp plays, Liverpool fans see a lot less of his flair and attacking talents in the final third.

Although, it was on show against Wolves yesterday and hopefully, from their perspective, a lot more wonder goals will hit the back of the opposition net.
