Tim Sherwood has told Sky Sports’ The Debate program [03/12/2018] he is ‘almost certain’ that centre-back Toby Alderweireld is leaving Tottenham Hotspur in the new year.

The Belgian’s long-term future in North London seems even more in doubt after Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino dropped him for Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal.

It was a decision which seemed to come out of the blue, as Pochettino instead elected to play 20-year-old Juan Foyth, who had three Premier Leagues games under his belt.

The 29-year-old is technically contracted to Spurs until 2019, though the club have the option to extend it by another year, at which point Alderweireld would be able to leave for only £25 million.

His future was the subject of much debate for most of last summer, and former Tottenham player and manager Sherwood is convinced that he will leave the Lilywhites.

He told Sky Sports’ The Debate program: “I was surprised when I saw Alderweireld was not in the starting lineup. I know Tottenham are looking for the future, because Alderweireld will almost certainly not be at the football club next year.”

With January around the corner, it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if links to Manchester United resurfaced.

It was reported by The Record in November that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wanted to sell the former Southampton stalwart next month – and wanted to sign Eric Bailly of the Red Devils.

If Spurs do sell, a replacement is vital because if Sunday proved anything, it’s that Foyth needs more time before he is ready.
