Tim Sherwood criticised Tottenham Hotspur central defenders Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez on talkSPORT (9:11am, October 19, 2020).

The former Tottenham manager believes that Alderweireld is going backward, and that fellow centre-back Sanchez makes too many mistakes.

Sherwood, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, added that he does not think that Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho knows his best centre-back pairing.

The former Aston Villa boss made the comments in the wake of Spurs conceding three goals in the final minutes of their Premier League game against West Ham United at the weekend to settle for a 3-3 draw.

Sherwood said on talkSPORT (9:11am, October 19, 2020): “I am not sure Jose really knows what his best centre-half partnership is. I think Eric Dier seems to be the one. He was injured yesterday.

“Alderweireld seems to be having a backward step but he played yesterday, and Sanchez for me makes too many mistakes. I think he is not sure in that area.”

According to WhoScored, against West Ham in the London derby, Sanchez had a pass accuracy of 82.5%, won one header, took 72 touches, and made two tackles and eight clearances.

The 24-year-old Colombia international central defender scored an own goal against the Hammers, but other than that, he did his job.

Regarding Sherwood’s claim about Sanchez making too many mistakes, it is hard to find a single footballer who does not do so in their career.

According to Kickest.it, Sanchez made no error last season that led to a goal, while first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made two.

Of course, there is room for improvement in Sanchez’s game, and working with Mourinho and competition from Joe Rodon for a place in the starting lineup would only make him better.
