Tim Sherwood has claimed on Sky Sports‘ Soccer Saturday program that Tottenham Hotspur legend David Ginola wouldn’t get a game under Jose Mourinho right now ahead of Steven Bergwijn.
Mourinho has Spurs absolutely flying right now and they went into this gameweek at the top of the Premier League table.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can sustain their title challenge for the entire season but, for now, they look the real deal.
The Portuguese coach is a big fan of the Dutch winger – a £25 million signing last January – and seems to play him for the big occasion, having started him against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.
And former Lilywhites manager Sherwood does not believe that Ginola would be able to oust the Netherlands star from this side.
He said: “They [former legends] wouldn’t play in this Tottenham side. They would not play, as good as they are. Legends of the club. Ginola wouldn’t do the running back what Bergwijn’s doing. He wouldn’t do that, although he was a brilliant player.”
It’s sort of a convoluted point but you can see what Sherwood means – and he’s probably right.
Bergwijn isn’t better than Ginola, but he doesn’t need to be. What he does need to do is whatever Mourinho asks and if the Tottenham boss demands a high-energy, back-breaking performance every week then the former PSV man is going to do that.
