Tottenham Hotspur allowed Jermain Defoe to leave Sunderland to join Bournemouth.
Tim Sherwood has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on July 4th, that if he was still in charge of Tottenham Hotspur he would have signed Jermain Defoe this summer.
Defoe was made available from Sunderland on a free transfer, after the Black Cats were relegated last season.
It was Bournemouth who acted the most quickly, to snap up the veteran forward.
But Sherwood feels that Tottenham should have offered Defoe the chance to return to North London.

“On a free transfer, I’d have definitely taken him,” Sherwood said. “A top six side should have taken him.
“Why not [bring him back to Tottenham]? He’d have loved to have gone back there. He wouldn’t have expected to play every week but when he did get on the pitch he would have given you something which is very difficult to guarantee – goals.”
Tottenham are known to be looking for back-up for Harry Kane this summer, as Mauricio Pochettino wants to strengthen his attacking options.
Vincent Janssen, who was brought to Spurs to be their secondary striker, struggled to make an impact during his first campaign in English football last term.
Defoe, meanwhile, had a fine goalscoring season – despite Sunderland’s struggles in the Premier League.
Defoe netted 15 goals for the Wearsiders last term, and even managed to force his way back into the England squad, despite his advancing years.
