Tim Sherwood has revealed that he told Ryan Mason to enjoy being Tottenham Hotspur manager rather than stress about it, when speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, which was broadcast on Optus Sport.

Mason has been plunged into first-team management at Tottenham following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal.

The 29-year-old has got off to a winning start, after guiding Spurs to a 2-1 win over Southampton in his first match.

Mason joins Tottenham at a pressurised time, however, as the club have a League Cup final against Manchester City on the horizon.

Mason will surely make himself a Tottenham hero if he can deliver some silverware.

But Sherwood thinks that Mason should just relax and embrace the opportunity that has presented itself.

Mason had to retire after fracturing his skull as a player, and Sherwood insists that battle was far tougher than anything he will face in charge of Spurs.

“He’s a great lad,” Sherwood enthused. “He’s a teammate of Harry Kane, they were rivals when I was running the academy.

“He is a fantastic footballer, great football man, loves the club and he’s got ability.

“He’s a scholar of the game now, his career and life nearly ended, and he’s thrown himself into the coaching side and I wish him well.

“But I spoke to him the other morning and I said this is nothing like fighting for your life. It’s a walk in the park. To manage Tottenham compared to sitting on a life support, fighting for your life. There’s nothing like that. This is easy, just get out there and enjoy it. That’s the message I sent him.”
