Tim Sherwood has said on Optus Sport that Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen isn’t in the same league as Kevin De Bruyne.

De Bruyne dazzled against Spurs at the Etihad on Saturday but it wasn’t enough to give Manchester City all three points, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side earning a 2-2 draw.

In contrast, Eriksen, his Tottenham equivalent, struggled in a major way and despite covering a lot of ground, the Dane was nowhere near as instrumental for his side as his Belgian counterpart.

The 27-year-old is one of the most acclaimed playmakers in the Premier League, but former Lilywhites boss Sherwood claims that De Bruyne is on another level entirely.

He told Optus Sport: “We talked about Eriksen before the game and how important he is to Tottenham, and we think he’s a world class player.

“But if you’re talking of world class, he’s nowhere near the level of this kid.”

Even some Tottenham fans might agree. Linked-away Eriksen underlined his importance to Pochettino last week with a game-changing cameo against Aston Villa.

But it’s been a very disappointing calendar year for him and his performance in the Champions League final defeat by Liverpool in June will live long in the memory of Spurs fans, for the wrong reasons.

Eriksen simply never turned up and it’s becoming a worrying, recurring theme on his part.
