20-year-old Liverpool defender excelled for England as a centre-back against Brazil.
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has claimed that Joe Gomez is Liverpool’s best centre-back.
Gomez has frequently been deployed at right-back at club level this season but excelled as a centre-back on Tuesday night as England drew 0-0 against Brazil at Wembley.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Sherwood said: “If you asked me who the best centre-half is at Liverpool at the moment, I’d tell you Joe Gomez. But is he going to get an opportunity to play ahead of some other players – I’d suggest he’s going to get limited game time.”
Gomez possesses much experience of playing as a centre-back from earlier in his career and certainly has the qualities required to play in that position – he is quick, calm on the ball and capable of making precisely-timed interceptions.
However, with Nathaniel Clyne still out injured, it seems likely that Gomez will continue to feature at right-back for Liverpool as Klopp may well consider it too much of a risk to move the 20-year-old to centre-back and put another inexperienced player, Trent Alexander-Arnold, in the side at right-back.
Liverpool have remained vulnerable defensively this season and Klopp’s current centre-back options – Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan – have all lacked consistency during their time at the club.
Currently in fifth place in the Premier League, Liverpool are back in action on Saturday when they host Southampton and, regardless of where he is deployed, Gomez will be hoping to produce another impressive performance.
