Tim Sherwood has told The Analysis Show that he tried to sign Burnley winger Aaron Lennon at Aston Villa in 2015, from Tottenham Hotspur. However, he joined Everton on loan – before signing permanently.

Lennon, 34, continued to prove that age is just a number on Saturday, scoring Burnley’s third in a 3-0 win over Brighton. The 21-time England international smashed an effort into the top corner against the Seagulls.

Back in 2015, Lennon was struggling for game time at Tottenham and joined Everton on loan from Spurs – before signing permanently that summer. But Sherwood says he tried to bring Lennon to Aston Villa.

The ex-Spurs man was in charge at Villa between February and October of 2015, and has now told the Analysis Show he tried to sign him in the summer of that year. But Lennon joined Everton on a permanent basis.

“Aaron Lennon, he’s older than me, Aaron. He’s still playing, but it doesn’t matter if you’re still sticking the ball in the top corner like that. I tried to take him to Villa, they wouldn’t allow me to do it,” Sherwood said.

“You know why he plays for Sean Dyche, because he’s so diligent. He does the job the manager wants, he puts the work in coming back and he still offers a threat going forward – that is why he is playing so many games.”

Lennon has been superb for Burnley of late. The ex-England winger is showing signs of the younger Lennon that sparkled in a Tottenham shirt, having a hand in 108 goals in 365 appearances for the London outfit.

Villa could do with that spark, after just one point in their last three games against Leeds, Newcastle and Watford. Following a stint at Everton, Lennon joined Burnley, went to Turkey, and is now back at Turf Moor.

Despite clocking up 593 club appearances, and 21 caps for his country and 29 more at youth level, Lennon is still going and at 34, could have a few more years left in the legs.
