Tim Sherwood makes Tottenham claim after Aston Villa drop points in top four race

Does anyone in the Premier League want fourth spot and Champions League football? 

Aston Villa and Tottenham are certainly doing everything they can to hand the initiative to one another.

Before the international break, Tottenham, only a week after beating Aston Villa, suffered a 3-0 loss at Fulham to the annoyance of their supporters.

That was Spurs shooting themselves in the foot and failing to push ahead of their top-four rivals in the race for Champions League football.

Well, on Saturday, Aston Villa did the same when they drew 3-3 at home to Brentford, despite being 2-0 up at the start of the second half.

It now means that Spurs, who have two games in hand ahead of their home clash against Nottingham Forest on Sunday evening, are three points behind and with a +1 better goal difference.

You would think the ball is now in their court and they should see off this fourth spot before the final ball is kicked in May.

Tim Sherwood is backing that to happen because he thinks Ange Postecoglou’s side ‘wouldn’t have conceded’ like Villa did against the Bees, as he told Premier League Productions (06/04/24 at 8:25 pm).

The former title-winning midfielder also feels Tottenham are ‘more on the front foot’ and have ‘more firepower’ than Unai Emery’s men.

Battle for Champions League football

“I think Aston Villa are getting nervous, there is a big prize at the end of this and they know Tottenham are chasing them for fourth place,” said Sherwood.

“I don’t think they will get it. I really don’t. Two of my old teams. But I think Tottenham are more on the front foot, they are more confident and have more firepower. I just think they wouldn’t have conceded like that.”

Tottenham’s remaining games

The Premier League has finally announced the dates for Tottenham’s final run-in that will see them play Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool within the space of a week.

That is going to be a huge, huge week in the Premier League.

Not just for Spurs, but in the title race and the fight for European football, with a lot on the line.

If Spurs don’t drop points from now until that week, then they know that maximum points aren’t required from those matches.

Plus, their final two games will be against Burnley and Sheffield United – you suspect both will be down by the time those games come about – so, this is now firmly in their hands.
