Tim Sherwood offered his thoughts on Dele Alli’s goal for Tottenham Hotspur against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

Tim Sherwood has claimed that Dele Alli’s ‘training ground goal’ during Tottenham’s Carabao Cup win against Arsenal on Wednesday night reminded him of Paul Merson.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium which secured their place in the semi-finals of the competition.
Son Heung-Min had given the away side the lead in the first half before Alli’s sublime dink over the onrushing Petr Cech just before the hour mark ensured that Spurs ran out as comfortable winners on the night.
Former Premier League winner Sherwood explained why Alli’s effortless goal reminded him of fellow Sky Sports pundit Merson as he raved about the former League One player.
“I played with Merson and he [did] it all the time on the training pitch and I used to see him do it on the pitch as well,” Sherwood told Sky Sports’ The Debate show on 19/12/2018 at 10:20 pm.
“But that’s a training ground goal (Alli’s) that. We knew what he was going to do. Petr Cech didn’t have an idea though, did he? He’s come out and he has just flicked it over him. Instinctive.”
Following the conclusion of the match, Spurs were drawn against London rivals Chelsea in a two-legged semi-final which takes place next month.

Midfielder Alli, who has an impressive goalscoring record against the Stamford Bridge club, netted against Maurizio Sarri’s side when they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League last month.
Alli will now be hoping to take his recent impressive form into the busy Christmas period, starting with an away clash at Everton on Sunday.
The England international, who had to nurse a hamstring injury earlier on in the campaign, has scored five goals and assisted a further three in all competitions this season.
