Tim Sherwood has told The Debate, which was broadcast on Sky Sports on 3rd September, that he believes Tottenham Hotspur duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld could move to China in the summer.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld have under a year left on their contracts at Tottenham, and there are real doubts over their futures.

Spurs have still not got either of the pair to pen new deals, which means they could leave on a free transfers at the end of the season.

And Sherwood thinks that a move to China could be a possibility for the duo.

The former Spurs boss said: “Alderweireld looks like he’s going to move and at 30 years of age, and Vertonghen at 32, it’s probably the last time they are going to fill the till up.

“It’s a short career they need to do that, perhaps [they could move to] China. Chinese clubs don’t take defenders very often, but they are probably waiting for that big one to come.”

If Alderweireld and Vertonghen were to move to China instead of penning a new contract at Tottenham it could risk frustrating supporters of the North London club.

Spurs fans don’t want either of Alderweireld or Vertonghen to depart, but if they were to leave for East Asia it would be hard to see the move as anything but money orientated.

Despite Alderweireld being 30 and Vertonghen being 32, they remain Tottenham’s two best defenders and two of the finest players in their position in the Premier League.

The pair are still surely too good to be playing in China, even despite all the riches on offer.

And they would surely be better off signing new deals for Tottenham than pursuing a move to the Chinese League, if an offer is put on the table by Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
