Christian Eriksen did not make it off the bench for Tottenham Hotspur last night.
Tim Sherwood has told Bein Sports that he thinks Christian Eriksen has just realised that he has no long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur, and may not play regularly this season.
Eriksen was left on Tottenham’s bench last night, as they beat Red Star Belgrade 5-0 in the Champions League.
The Dane has struggled for form throughout 2019, with his future very uncertain.
Eriksen has under a year left on his contract at Spurs, and suggested that he would be open to a move in the summer.
The playmaker never managed to get the transfer which he seemingly wanted, and he has been played a handful of times by Mauricio Pochettino this season, when his Spurs side have been in need of creaitvity.
But Sherwood thinks that writing is finally on the wall for Eriksen now.
And the former Spurs boss claims that last night’s omission suggests that everyone at the club is starting to realise that Eriksen leaving may be best for all parties.
“I think he realises now,” Sherwood admitted. “He’s such an important player and a good character, he’ll be training his best trying to get back into the plans.
“But I think Mauricio, Daniel Levy and Christian know that his long term future is not at White Hart Lane.”
Whether Spurs will opt to sell Eriksen in January now remains to be seen, as it could be their last chance to raise some money for him.
The attacking midfielder’s value will have dropped in recent months, due to his contractual situation combined with his poor form, but Spurs may be better off taking the financial hit than losing him on a free at the end of the season, if he is not part of their first-team plans anyway.
