Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has openly spoken about selling the club as he currently has Rafa Benitez in charge.
Tim Sherwood has outrageously claimed that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has ‘invested all’ the club’s money in having a ‘top manager in Rafa Benitez’.
Prior to the January transfer window opening, retail businessman Ashley told Sky Sports that he is hoping to sell the club before the transfer window re-opens.
Unsurprisingly to Newcastle fans, no sale has been made yet, but former Premier League manager Sherwood did send a warning to the supporters about club’s ‘throwing money’ at new players.
“Look at who Fulham signed,” Sherwood told Sky Sports’ The Debate show on 16/01/2019 at 10:55 pm. “What does that guarantee them? They are below Newcastle in the league. There is no guarantee. It’s not all about throwing money at it.
“Sometimes the biggest improvements come from a coach who knows what he’s doing. Improving and organising the team to get a result and that is what they have invested all their money in. A top manager in Rafa Benitez.”
Ashley has been in charge of the north-east club for over a decade and during that period they have suffered two relegations to the Championship, most recently in 2016.
To this date, retired striker Michael Owen, who signed for the Magpies from Real Madrid in 2005, still remains the club’s biggest transfer purchase.
At this moment in time, Benitez’s side are sitting in the bottom three of the Premier League table as they take on fellow strugglers Cardiff City at the weekend.
Newcastle go into that game on the back of a 4-2 FA Cup replay win at Blackburn Rovers, but they did suffer a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea last time out in the league.
Nonetheless, three points for Benitez and his team on Saturday will ensure they leapfrog Cardiff in the table and move into safety.
