Tim Sherwood has told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (21/08/21 at 12:25 pm) that Leeds striker Patrick Bamford should ’emulate’ Tottenham’s Harry Kane this season.

It was a season to remember for Bamford last time out, as Kane was the only Englishman to outscore the Leeds player in the Premier League.

But Bamford is going to get the obvious thrown at him this season and that’s the claim that he could be a ‘one-season wonder’.

Sherwood was the one who brought Kane through the ranks at Spurs and handed him that real first-team opportunity.

The England captain was written off by many after he showcased his talents and Sherwood backed Bamford to go down the path of Kane.

“A lot of onus again on Patrick Bamford,” asked presenter Jeff Stelling. “He’s got to prove that last season wasn’t a flash in the pan.”

“He’s just got to try and emulate Harry Kane,” said Sherwood. “Good luck with it. Everyone wrote Harry off in his first season. Can he do it again?

“Similar age. A similar path that they have trod in order to get to the Premier League and he needs to continue to score on a regular basis.

“I think he works hard for the side. I think he will continue to play in the team because of what he gives the side as a whole. But he needs some support and to help them out.”

If Bamford is back to his poaching best inside that penalty area this season then a certain Gareth Southgate has to call him up.

The former Chelsea academy product was pretty unlucky to not be part of that England party that thrived at Euro 2020.

Initially, it was Ollie Watkins who was picked ahead of Bamford in that 33-man squad, but it does seem as though the Leeds man is next on the list.

Although, given that Bamford is yet to open his account for the new campaign, it will be hard to see him picked next Thursday when Southgate selects his players for the forthcoming internationals in September.
