Tim Sherwood claims he discovered Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and wanted him at Tottenham

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood has been discussing Arsenal’s record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Tottenham brought in Lucas Moura for £25 million from Paris St Germain in the January transfer window while bitter rivals Arsenal smashed their transfer record with the £60 million signing of Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

Spurs already have one of the best teams in Europe under Mauricio Pochettino while the Gunners are struggling to keep up with their neighbours in the chase for the Champions League spots.

Arsenal’s signing of Aubameyang stole the limelight on transfer deadline day and has sparked much debate among fans and pundits as to whether he will be a success in the Premier League and if Arsenal’s money would have been better spent elsewhere.

What fans probably didn’t know, though, was that former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood – who takes great pride in the fact he gave Harry Kane his big chance at the club – claims to have discovered the Gabon international striker.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate, Sherwood claimed he urged the Spurs hierarchy to sign a young Aubameyang after he caught his eye during a scouting mission.

“He’s (Aubameyang) not that well known (in the Premier League), I saw him play a long time ago,” Sherwood told Sky Sports’ The Debate.

“I was watching Sandro play, old Tottenham player, for Brazil and I watched him play against the Gabon and I saw this boy running up and down the flank there on the right hand side, a young kid.

“Straight away I rung back home and said ‘We need to start having a serious look at this boy’ and they did, they looked at him, tracked him for a while and the manager at the time didn’t think that was what he wanted.”
