Chelsea are reportedly close to signing AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain ahead of their League Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

Tim Sherwood has claimed that Gonzalo Higuain will start for Chelsea in their Carabao Cup second leg semi-final encounter against Tottenham on Thursday.

The Telegraph claims that Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is hoping the club can complete the signing of the AC MIlan forward by noon on Wednesday, so he can be available for the Stamford Bridge showdown.

Ahead of that crucial tie against Spurs, former Premier League boss Sherwood made a big prediction in stating that Higuain will start in the match and could possibly become a hero for his team.

“He [Higuain] will come into the team, I think on Thursday against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup,” Sherwood told The Debate on Sky Sports on 21/01/2019 at 10:30 pm.

“I think if they get it done in time, he will start in that game and he can be a hero in that game. But there’s a lot of pressure.”

According to transfermarkt, Higuain, who has played in Italy, Spain and Argentina during his career, has amassed an impressive 290 goals from his 569 matches as a footballer.

For large parts of the season, Sarri has played star man Eden Hazard as a false number nine, with bonafide strikers Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata sitting on the bench.

The Guardian claims that Morata is now closing in on a loan move to La Liga side Atletico Madrid as he looks to revive his career in his homeland.

During Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend, Sarri opted to start Hazard up front, with Giroud coming on against his former club in the second half.

The Italian opted for the same tactic against Spurs during the first leg, but Harry Kane’s first-half penalty was enough to give Mauricio Pochettino’s side an advantage as both teams will be hoping to progress through to the final.
