It was another questionable home performance from Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, this time a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

In the context of the whole game, Ange Postecoglou’s side were the better team and should have secured the three points.

Whilst captain Bruno Fernandes got praised for the role he played in Manchester United’s opener at Old Trafford, he was slammed for his lack of effort during the match.

Tim Sherwood stated that the 29-year-old was ‘pretending’ to press from the middle of the park, as he told Premier League Productions (14/01/24 at 6:45 pm).

Last summer, Erik ten Hag made a big call when he stripped Harry Maguire of the captaincy and handed it to Bruno Fernandes.

The £68 million star is very much loved by the Manchester United supporters, even though he is a marmite-like figure outside of it.

And the wrong side of the playmaker was showcased against Tottenham, which Tim Sherwood was pretty adamant to point out.

Bruno Fernandes’ pressing

“Bruno Fernandes was pretending he was putting a press on,” said Sherwood. “He was getting near no-one.”

Manchester United’s performances

The issue for Man United is that they just aren’t looking convincing. Yes, they did tremendously well to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on Boxing Day.

But they followed it up by losing to Nottingham Forest and now these dropped points again on home soil.

That lack of inconsistent nature just further highlights why it’s likely that they won’t be playing Champions League football this season.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Spurs are just too good for Man United to finish above at least two of them.
