After their relegation to the Championship at the end of last season, long-term goalkeeper Tim Krul, who emerged from the Magpies youth system in 2006, departed the club on loan this summer.

Joining Dutch side AZ Alkmaar this January, after his loan deal at Ajax was cut short, the keeper has been working hard to keep himself performing at a top level, and has recently been discussing his future at Newcastle United.

Speaking to Dutch media outlet Omroepwest, Tim Krul revealed his intention to head back to Tyneside and battle Karl Darlow for the number 1 spot at St James Park, stating: “Newcastle is where I’m going to go in the summer.

And the keeper may have a good shot at it, after putting together a string of impressive performances for AZ Alkmaar this season, including a penalty save which helped secure AZ’s place in the Dutch Cup final.

But will Krul be able to get back in the side? Karl Darlow’s performances have been excellent this season, and the young English keeper has firmly put his gloves on the number 1 spot at St James’ Park this season, fending off competition from Rob Elliot and Matz Sels.

After playing such a vital part in Newcastle United’s likely promotion back to the top flight, the former Nottingham Forest keeper Darlow is likely to be given, and has arguably earned, a shot as Newcastle United’s number 1 keeper next season.

With this in mind, Tim Krul’s future at St James’ Park might not be settled just yet. Top keepers will continue to want to play regular football, as the Dutchman proved this summer by opting for a loan move. However, as far as Krul himself is concerned, Newcastle fans can expect to see him back in action next season.
