Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill has taken to Twitter to congratulate Steven Gerrard after he announced his retirement from professional football.

The former Liverpool captain announced his retirement today, bringing an end to a 19-year playing career.

In that time he amassed 710 appearances for the Reds, who he captained from 2003 to 2015, as well 114 appearances for England.

His career was a successful one too, as he won the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and three League Cups during his time at Anfield.

In that time he came up against former Blue Cahill a number of times in Merseyside derbies and it seems the Australian holds no grudges as he took to Twitter to praise his former opponent.

It will now be interesting to see what the next step Gerrard decides to take in his career.

He has already turned down the chance to take the vacant manager’s position at MK Dons but it is easy to imagine he will end up in a management role at some point in future.

For now, a return to Liverpool looks most likely, perhaps helping the youth set up and nurturing the next Steven Gerrard at Anfield.
