Tim Cahill comments on Everton’s top-six hopes

Where will Everton and Liverpool finish in the Premier League this season?

Tim Cahill has stated that Everton needs to have ‘that mentality’ of being part of the big-six because, just like Liverpool, they have spent vasts amounts of money in recent seasons.

Marco Silva’s side finished eighth last season, whilst their neighbours were runners-up to champions Manchester City, with recent purchases such as Virgil van Dijk, Allison Becker and Fabinho playing a huge part in their success.

For a number of seasons now, the Everton owners have made themselves heard in the transfer market, and after pushing the boat out once again, they will be keen on securing European football.

Former Goodison Park fan favourite Cahill made it clear that Everton have to challenge the big-six this term, as he stated that they have to see themselves as realistic contenders after spending big-money.

“I expect Everton now to challenge for the top-six,” Cahill told MOTD2. “The spend [in the transfer market] is fantastic because the fans wanted change, they wanted investment and they wanted a stadium. Everything seems to be going to plan.

“The football is really positive. Silva is making his mark. Now he’s got his players, there’s an expectation. The expectation as an ex-player and from the fans is sixth has to be the number. Finishing eighth two years on the spin, after spending that amount of money, puts pressure on it.

“But I think the good thing is having Bill Kenwright behind him also. Someone who believes in the club, someone who was there when I was there. This is a big moment and this is the season Silva has to produce. [Finishing sixth] realistic, why not? You look at Liverpool’s spend, £400 million. When you are spending that amount of money you should see yourself and have that mentality that you are part of the big six.”

Well, Everton have started off the season in a bright fashion, with four points from their opening two Premier League matches.

They will be hoping to extend that unbeaten run when they take on Aston Villa on Friday night, with the newly-promoted side losing their opening two matches of the season.
