Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been discussing England’s World Cup squad selection and Ben White.

The Arsenal defender has been in fine fettle this season, more than playing his part in Mikel Arteta’s table-topping side.

However, that good form hasn’t been rewarded with an England call-up for the most recent round of international fixtures, and with the World Cup just around the corner, it’s fair to say that he may not be on the plane to Qatar in November.

While Seaman thinks that White should be going to the World Cup, he does admit, even as an Arsenal fan, that the centre-half has some question marks around him in terms of selection.

White to the World Cup?

Seaman spoke about White.

“I do because of where he plays. He’s versatile, he can play at centre-half or at right-back, but he’d become fifth choice at right-back because we have so much strength there, so he’d just be there as a centre-half and that’s tight, that’s definitely a question mark, but that will be a tough one with Ben White, dependant on injuries I think, with the Stones situation, would I put him ahead of Coady? I think I would and that’s not just with my Arsenal head on,” Seaman said.

“He can play in midfield a bit, but we have great right-backs with England so he won’t be needed in that position, but he can play in two positions.”

No brainer

While White seemingly isn’t Southgate’s first choice at the moment, in our view, taking him to the World Cup is a no brainer.

This is a versatile, confident, £50m defender who is in much better form than the likes of Harry Maguire or Conor Coady.

White should absolutely be on his way to the World Cup this winter, but unfortunately, due to continued baffling selection decisions, it’s tough to see Southgate giving the Arsenal star the nod.
