The PGA of America has let Tiger Woods know when they need a decision on the Ryder Cup captaincy as preparations begin for the 2027 event at Adare Manor.

According to an Associated Press report, Tiger Woods is currently the sole candidate under consideration, with Team USA looking to end their long drought in Europe.

Woods declined the role ahead of the 2025 event at Bethpage Black. He has since been appointed as chairman of the Future Competition Committee on the PGA Tour.

During the Hero World Challenge in December, Woods said he hadn’t been approached about the Ryder Cup job. Since then, though, it appears he’s been given a rough timeline to make up his mind.

The Associated Press reports that while it’s not a strict deadline, the PGA of America has indicated they’d prefer to have his answer before The Masters.

2027 Ryder Cup: Why the PGA of America can’t afford another slow start

While the report points to Woods being a top priority for the PGA of America, they’ll need to have backup plans in place in case he decides not to take it on.

There’s a risk that they could repeat one of their early missteps from the lead-up to Bethpage.

It made sense at the time that they wanted to give Woods every chance to accept. But when he turned it down, they were forced into an unexpected move with Keegan Bradley.

The decision came as a shock even for Bradley himself, who admitted he wasn’t expecting it.

If Woods says no this time around, the PGA of America can’t afford another long delay before naming his replacement. Meanwhile, Europe hasn’t confirmed their captain either, but if it’s not Luke Donald, Francesco Molinari seems like an obvious choice given his recent experience as vice-captain.

Molinari would provide a smooth transition for Europe. On the US side, if Woods turns down the role again, things could become very unpredictable in terms of who steps in next.
